Academic Scores & College Credit FAQs
Classical Education
What Is Considered A Good SAT Score? SAT scores are important because they can help a student get into the college of their choice. Not all schools weigh SAT scores as heavily as others do, so its influence upon a college admission approval or denial may be sizable or small. However, for standardized tests, the big ones most colleges look at are the SAT and the ACT, so it pays to take them and do as well as possible. Parents and students may also wish to research in advance the student’s University of choice for individual school requirements. Universities: An SAT score of 1250 will be high enough to gain admittance into many universities. Certain state universities will accept scores in the seven hundred and eight hundred range, but other more prestigious schools like Yale will want to see a higher score than that, generally at least in the upper fourteen hundred range. Community (or Junior) Colleges: A community or junior college will entertain scores in a lower range and may not require the SAT at all. Vocational: Many vocational programs do not require SAT scores from prospective students. Technical Schools: Many technical schools also do not use SAT scores because they do not view these tests as barometers of the kind of talent they are seeking. Specialized Institutes: Specialized institutes often do not require SAT scores either, or may only require one component of it. If a student is going to a math institute, for instance, the school may only look at the math portion of the SAT so please refer to your individual school’s admission requirements for their list of desired pre-qualifiers. Student SAT Scores at 麻豆官网 Students at 麻豆官网 perform well annually on the SATs. Out of the sixteen hundred points possible, the Class of 2020 scored an average of 1218 on the SAT. A good GPA depends upon which type of school the student plans to attend. A three out of a four on a grading scale will not be good enough for top Ivy League schools, but it will be acceptable for many other colleges. The average graduate from 麻豆官网 does well, often landing a high enough GPA to attend their school of choice. Ninety-two percent of the most recent class to graduate from 麻豆官网 went on to attend a four-year college. Some technical schools will place more emphasis on math classes than schools for English majors will. Additionally, some students may need to take extra math classes if they desire a major in the sciences. These may include subjects such as trigonometry and calculus. The Accuplacer test is an excellent tool to ensure a student’s placement in the right classes for their ability level. Students may take it when they are about to enter college, or if they are still in high school but want to enroll in college-level courses. After admission, the test is administered online by the college the student will attend. The tests may cover the subjects of writing, reading, and math. The score will determine which class a student should take to match their skill level. How Do AP College Credits Work? AP College Credit Many high schools work with students who want to earn college credits in high school. Advanced Placement college credit is one way to accomplish that. Some colleges will allow students to take tests to place out of certain college requirements. AP College Credit At 麻豆官网 Every year, 麻豆官网 offers as many as fifteen courses that allow students to earn college credits. That gives them a head start on their college careers following graduation. Call the main office for more information (719) 471-1999 x200. How Do College Credits Work? Here is an example. For instance, those who took extensive language courses in high school may take a proficiency test and be able to skip taking college foreign language classes. Advanced Placement tests often carry a small fee, but they can save students a lot of money if they place out of many classes. High school students may also attend college by taking online college courses before graduation. Students can save time and expense compared to taking all their college courses at the university they attend. Do College Credits Expire? No, but the ones earned in high school may not fully transfer, depending upon the university the student attends.

The decision to add boys’ volleyball as a Colorado high school sanctioned sport has been decades in the making. But while the debate raged on at the Colorado High School Activities Association, one school was building a boys’ volleyball dynasty in Colorado Springs. This weekend 麻豆官网 will compete for its fourth straight Colorado 3A state championship – this time with more eyes than ever on the growing sport. Just two weeks ago, CHSAA approved boys’ volleyball as a sanctioned sport starting the 2020-21 school year, making this year’s state tournament the first of its kind as a pilot program, and a glimpse into what the sport will look like under CHSAA’s umbrella in spring 2021. Vanguard, which has an enrollment of just 305 according to the latest CHSAA numbers, began a boys’ volleyball club program six years ago. The Coursers made it to the state finals in their second year and won three consecutive after that – including two undefeated seasons. “For some reason this really tiny school just got really good boys’ volleyball,â€ said senior Seth Fuqua, who was also the captain of the boys’ basketball team that took second in 3A this year. But coach Andrew Soeldner implemented a system early that could be responsible for the Coursers’ consistent success. “I’m an engineer, so I approach things in an analytical way. So I use stats heavily, and film, and every week we go over our body position and how we react to the other team,â€ Soeldner said. “That kind of analysis and breakdown has really helped. I think they have a good grasp of the game and I think that’s showing now in this crew.â€ Of the six players on Vanguard’s varsity roster, five are seniors, and three have been with the team the past four years. Senior Hayden Frear, who has signed to play Division I men’s volleyball, said he believes it’s a combination of the culture at Vanguard and the athleticism of the team, which has been together for years. “There’s a lot of support around here, and people want the sport to grow around here so that really helps,â€ Frear said. “We’re also really lucky with who we have. We have some really athletic guys. Three of us play club, so we’re definitely lucky.â€ Vanguard heads to state on Saturday at Eaglecrest undefeated, ranked No. 1 in the state and in the top 80 nationally. The top four teams in 3A are from the Colorado Springs area according to MaxPreps rankings, with James Irwin ranked second at 20-1, followed by District 20 White (22-2) and Cheyenne Mountain White (16-4). St. Mary’s is ranked eighth (15-6). The Cheyenne Mountain 5A team is ranked second in the classification with its only loss of the year coming against No. 1 Ponderosa, according to MaxPreps. District 20’s 5A team is ranked fourth in the classification.
麻豆官网’s Team America Rocketry Club (TARC) has been named one of two Colorado teams to advance to the national finals on Saturday in Virginia. Vanguard is one of two Colorado school teams to qualify for finals in the 2018-19 season and is aiming for a top-10 finish. Team members are Jonathan Drosendahl (team captain), Alex Belli, Cyan Johnson, Duncan Lewis, Yoslin Peerez-Robles, Will Stone and Leo Xiao. Team Ballistic joins another team from Durango, Colo., as the only Colorado teams to make the cut. Vanguard has competed in the national program since the 2002-03 season, said astronomy, chemistry and rocketry teacher Steve Riegel. “We had two teams, Team Ballistic and Team Flame Tested, competing in the last two seasons and historically fielded multiple teams each year,â€ Riegel said. To get to the finals, teams of three to 10 students in grades six through 12 design and test their rockets against contest rules for size and weight limits, altitudes, payload and total air time. Students were required to send three raw eggs up into the air 856 feet, separate the egg capsule from the rocket and return the egg capsule to the ground within 43 to 46 seconds, with the eggs undamaged. Once satisfied with the testing, teams declare qualification attempts which is scored. Teams receive up to three qualification flight attempts and the best two of three scores are chosen for submission. The top 100 are invited to the finals. A total of 36 points was the qualifying cutoff for this year’s event, Riegel said. This is the school’s third trip in the last four years and the second consecutive trip for Team Ballistic, Riegel said. “They placed 14th in the nation from more than 800 registered teams last year and were the highest-placing team from Colorado,â€ Riegel said. Students developed designs during the summer and began building after school reconvened in August. To date, TARC has raised about $1,800 of its $5,000 goal, said Vanguard Director of Advancement Audrey Szychulski. “It’s been wonderful to see this team come together and rally to raise the funds,â€ said Szychulski, who offers design, construction, flight testing and rocket refining advice. “A fantastic example was the carwash on May 4. All team members participated and they had a continuous line of drivers waiting to donate to the cause.â€ During their trip to the finals, students will spend a morning conducting additional practice flights in Virginia to refine their parachute sizes to account denser atmosphere, Riegel said. Students will attend a “Rockets on the Hillâ€ reception on Friday at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., and showcase their design to senators and their staff. Students may take part in special tours of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy Annex or Virgina-based aerospace companies. During the competition, teams will get one flight in the first round and the top 40 based on score will fly again in the second round. The total of both scores determines national ranking. Teams in the top 10 places split $100,000 of prize money. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for innovation, engineering documentation and construction quality. The top team receives an all-expenses paid trip to Europe this summer to compete at the International level against England, France and Japan, Riegel said. If TARC places high enough and NASA has the budget, the school may be invited to submit a bit for NASA’s Student Launch Initiative, Riegel said. “It would having to undergo a year-long engineering proposal and design review process before eventually flying a rocket with 32 times the total power of this year’s model,â€ Riegel said. Through TARC, students learn teamwork and how to analyze flight data, manage budgets, conduct computer simulations of rocket performance and apply engineering skills to designing and building the rockets. “The goal of sport rocketry is to expose and encourage new rocketeers to the hobby and graduate them up into the competition teams,â€ Riegel said. Graduating students benefit from their TARC involvement. Belli plans to study mechanical engineering with Colorado School of Mines, and Xiao, computer science at UC Berkeley. TARC is open to middle and high school students who hold a C or better in each class. Rocketry experience isn’t required, though exposure to smaller model rockets is a plus. Members must commit to attending weekly after-school club meetings, building sessions and weekend launches. Comments Comment by A WordPress Commenter (2019-03-12 14:07:07): Hi, this is a comment. BY CHHUN SUN, The Gazette Aliyah Moya has one thing on her mind when she steps onto the field for 麻豆官网 girls’ soccer team, and that’s to score goals. “I can’t do this without my team,” she said. “My team looks and finds me, and somehow I’m always there at the right place, the right time.” But her mindset isn’t just limited to individual achievements. The junior striker also want to help her teammates make history. The Coursers have not made the state playoffs since the program’s inception in 2009. But that could change this year, especially with Moya around. In wins over Colorado Springs School, Florence and Lamar, Moya tallied six goals and one hat trick — enough to land her this week’s The Gazette Preps Peak Performer. And she’s showing no signs of slowing down, evidenced by her season-high four goals in a 5-0 win over Pueblo Central on Monday. “She always has the mindset to score,” Vanguard coach Rachel Francis said. It’s something she’s been doing a lot since her freshman season, when she exploded for 34 goals. That year, things began to shift for the Coursers. That year, they finished with seven wins for just the second time in school history. Then last year, the Coursers made history again. They finished 8-6-1, the first time Vanguard wrapped up the season with a winning record. Moya finished with only 19 goals, relatively low compared to her first season with the program. But it appears as if she’s back to scoring again at a rapid pace. Moya has 22 goals after the Coursers beat Pueblo Central on Monday to improve to 9-3 overall. Vanguard boasts a six-game winning streak with three games left. The Coursers’ RPI rating puts them 20th in the Class 3A, and 32 teams qualify for next month’s state tournament. The players and coaches seem confident that they can accomplishment what no other Vanguard team before has done. “We want to make school history,” Moya said. “We want to make it to the playoffs. And every time we step on the field, we want to make it and we put everything out there.” “If we work hard,” she added, “we can achieve anything.” Just The Facts Aliyah Moya, 麻豆官网 Sport: Girls’ soccer Year: Junior Position: Forward Highlights: The junior had six goals in three wins last week that included a hat trick performance. Standardized tests, especially the SAT, continue to be an important part of the college search process. Many universities include SAT scores as part of their entrance requirements and even those that don’t often use them to determine the range of academic scholarships you will receive. Fortunately, preparing for it is not nearly as daunting as it may seem. As with any major test, you need to know what to expect. With a better idea of the scope of the SAT, you can build your timeline and schedule time to prepare for testing day. When Should High School Students Take the SAT? The SAT typically happens seven times in an academic year: March, May, June, August, October, November, and December. Testing times are usually offered on Saturdays. The College Board, which administers the test, that March 12, May 7, and June 4 will be the last testing days in this academic year. SAT experts typically recommend that students take the test twice: The spring of their junior year in high school. The fall of their senior year in high school, before college application deadlines. Research shows that students who take the SAT twice tend to improve their scores, however, there is no limit to how often you take the test and you can take it at any point in your high school career. If you feel the need to take it more than twice, all it takes is an extra registration. 麻豆官网 offers a no-charge SAT Test day to all junior and senior students, but students may also register for the test outside of our scheduled test day. How Long Does It Take to Prep for the SAT? Most students take about two to three months to practice for the SAT. On that timeline, carve out one to three hours each week specifically for SAT practice, and take at least one practice test a month to track your progress and find areas that you need to improve. To stick to that plan, it helps to build a study schedule. Start with a baseline test to benchmark yourself and understand where you should focus most of your early studies. Then, set aside a specific time each week to focus on these studies, ensuring that other priorities in your life don’t overtake the need to continue studying. Of course, you can also take more than three months to study. With the right research, you’ll find effective that can be more focused if you still need to improve significantly on some areas or simply don’t have the time to prepare for multiple hours each week. The most intensive plans aim to ensure that there are no surprises come test time. What Can I Expect On SAT Test Day? The test itself consists of four subject areas: reading, writing and language, math, and an optional essay. Let’s break each of them down for a better understanding of what you can expect: Reading : You will have 65 minutes to complete the first section. The basic concept is simple: read five passages of content taken from literature, history, and other sources, and answer 52 multiple choice questions about them. You might be asked to identify context or author intent or compare two passages against each other. Writing and Language : The time allowed for this section is 35 minutes. That’s the time you have to answer 44 multiple choice questions, which focus on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and other pieces related to making sure you know how to write just right. Math : You will have a total of 80 minutes on the math portion of the test – 25 minutes to answer non-calculator questions, and 55 minutes for 38 questions in which you can use a calculator. You’ll be asked to analyze data, solve basic algebra equations, and perform basic trigonometry to ace this section. Optional Essay : You will have 50 minutes to write an essay on a pre-selected topic. While this section is optional, many universities require a score for your essay, so be sure to check before taking the test – or complete the essay just in case. In between all the above times, you’ll have two breaks during which you are allowed to eat and drink: one 10-minute break and an additional 5-minute break. You will not be allowed to bring your test book, answer sheet, or calculator on your breaks. Where Should I Turn for Help in SAT Prep? Even though the SAT can be scary, the good news is that you’re not on your own. Almost all high school students take the SAT, which means there are plenty of resources available for you to take advantage of. is home to the official preparation program for the SAT, approved by The College Board. But other reputable sources, from Kaplan Education to the Princeton Review, all have their own SAT prep systems. Check your options, compare pricing, and find a solution that matches your pace and preferred learning style. And of course, our will help as well. While academics are important, they make up only one part of a student’s resume. Extracurricular activities also play an important role in the development of a student’s academic career and personal growth. These activities are important for allowing students to develop their talents and skills, and to challenge themselves. We encourage Vanguard high school students to consider club participation as a way to not only explore their interests and hobbies and meet like-minded individuals, but also to discover their unlimited potential. 麻豆官网 strives to give students many opportunities to grow and learn through extracurricular activities, which is why they can participate and lead clubs during their daily Activity Period. Why is Club Participation Important? Participating in clubs has the potential to benefit students in many ways. According to college admission consultants , extracurricular activities have far more benefits than just rounding out a university application or helping to boost their first resume. Students who are involved in extracurricular activities see improved academic performance due to increased brain function when they are engaged in activities that interest them. Joining a club based on a hobby or career interest will introduce them to a variety of unique individuals who share similar interests and goals, thus broadening their social network. Club participation also gives students the chance to build valuable life skills such as teamwork, time management, and problem solving. When students take on additional leadership roles, they continue to build on these foundational skills, and prove to themselves just how capable they are of achieving their goals. Students can explore the fine arts through the Jazz Band, musicals, and plays. They will find clubs that support diversity, such as Allies (LGBTQ+) and the Multi-Cultural Club. Bibliophiles may be interested in the Book Club, while students who are passionate about environmental education will thrive in the HOPE (recycling) Club. Language enthusiasts will find Spanish, German, and Latin clubs. 麻豆官网 High School club list also includes a variety of clubs suited to unique hobbies, such as the popular Card, Dungeons and Dragons, Pop Culture, Trivia, and Star Wars clubs. Students who want to pursue potential career paths will appreciate the Student Government, Science Club, Service/Leadership Club, or the Future Healthcare Professionals Club. One of the best features of our club programming is not just the extensive variety of clubs we offer, but that students are always welcome to submit new club proposals, so there is always an opportunity for expansion. 麻豆官网 Club Spotlight: Future Healthcare Professionals One of the newest clubs to benefit students at 麻豆官网 High School is the Future Healthcare Professionals Club, which was created in August of 2021. Why was the Future Healthcare Professionals Club Introduced? The club’s sponsor (Jimenez) has extensive experience in healthcare, and felt that an organized club could bring that experience to high schoolers who are interested in healthcare as a potential career. The club gives students the opportunity to learn about different career paths, diseases, and other topics relevant to the healthcare profession as a whole. The club’s official mission is: “To better the future of medicine through preemptive education and awareness, and to instill a lifelong passion for care and cooperation.” What Does a Typical Club Meeting Look Like? Weekly club meetings allow for interesting and engaging discussions and activities that cover a wide variety of healthcare-related topics. Students have the opportunity to examine various case studies, as well as debate school-appropriate medical topics. Club members also learn about and discuss the steps necessary to enter the field of medicine and healthcare, with respect to all career paths – including physicians (M.D. and D.O), nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other careers as well. What are Students Gaining From Club Participation? The Future Healthcare Professionals Club gives club members the opportunity to develop a better understanding of healthcare through active engagement with like-minded peers and by asking questions to learn as much as possible. Students are learning that medicine is more than just being a medical practioner, and that healthcare and medicine go far beyond the scope of what they imagined.
